2004 Tsunami: A Veteran's Account

The roar wasn't like anything I'd ever heard before. Not the rumble of artillery, not the shriek of fighter jets, nothing. It was a sound born of the earth itself, a monstrous, guttural groan that ripped through the air and stole the breath from my lungs. I was on holiday in Khao Lak, Thailand, a veteran finally enjoying some much-needed peace after years in the army. Peace, ironically, was about to be violently shattered.

The Unfolding Disaster

It was December 26th, 2004. The morning had been idyllic; the sun was warm on my skin, the ocean a serene turquoise. I remember sipping my coffee, the gentle lapping of waves against the shore a soothing soundtrack to my quiet breakfast. Then, the earth moved.
